B5-2. How much water is needed to float a wood block?
PURPOSE: To show the buoyancy of water.
DESCRIPTION: We know whether a object will sink or float in water depends on the density. If the object density is smaller than the water it floats. How much water do you need to float a wood block? The ratio of the minimum of water to the volume of the wood is equal to the ratio of wood density to the water density. Since the wood density is much smaller than water, little water ( see the water level in the first picture ) is needed to float the wood block.
EQUIPMENT: A square container, a wood block and water.
