Olin Workshop on Risk Assessment: Policy, Philosophy, and Methods

Purpose of the Workshop

Risk assessment has increasingly pervaded environmental regulation, decision-making, and legislation over the past decade. At the interface between life and chemical sciences, engineering, public policy, and law, debates over the methods of and even the application of risk assessment techniques have become important for the environmental professional to understand. The application of risk assessment to environmental decision-making stipulates that we no longer simply ask whether something is good or bad, but what the appropriate balance between conflicting goals, and often alternative risks, might be. This workshop framed some of the current issues, practices, and debates in the area of environmental risk assessment, with a particular focus on applications to human health applications.
