| Olin Workshop
on Air Pollution, Airborne Particulate Matter, and Health
Purpose of the Workshop
New observations linking adverse health
effects with air pollution recently led to the revision of our national
ambient air quality standards for airborne particulate matter and
ozone. These changes were part of an overall effort to ensure that
air quality policies reflect up-to-date scientific information on
health effects. Health effects studies carried out in Philadelphia
have played an important role in the new developments in our understanding
of health impacts of air pollution. The broad scope of activities
aimed at pre-serving clean air on a local as well as national scale
was explored in this workshop. A portion of the workshop was devoted
to an in-depth look at ongoing activities to further understand
the relationship between airborne particulate matter and human health.
A detailed look at this timely and locally important air pollution
problem, as well as a broad perspective on local and national air
pollution issues was presented. The purpose of the workshop was
to provide both a practical representation of professional activities
required for successful air quality management, and insight into
the importance of scientific research in guiding air pollution policy.
