| Environmental
Assessment Area of Specialization
This area of specialization includes:
(1) The measurement and evaluation of current environmental quality
and conditions, (2) Environmental modeling and (3) Prediction of environmental
trends as related to the actions of governmental or private agencies.
This is a very broad area of specialization which requires a knowledge
of most of the subject areas of environmental science as well as modeling
and forecasting techniques. In any specific case, environmental assessment
may focus on atmospheric phenomena, hydrologic and water quality events
(both surface water and groundwater), trends in plant and animal populations
and communities, topological and geological changes or any combination
of these.
Students who specialize in environmental
assessment may find employment opportunities related to data collection
interpretation, making environmental audits, environmental modeling
and forecasting, or writing and reviewing environmental impact statements.
Opportunities are available in public agencies, but some industries
and consulting firms also have such positions.
