Changes for the Better
Coatings have changed for two main reasons, regulations and performance. Coatings regulations were enacted to reduce air pollution caused by VOC (volatile organic content) and HAPS (hazardous air pollutants). Chemicals classified as VOC and HAPS contribute to health problems, smog, and the depletion of the ozone layer. The new formulas contain less VOC and HAPS than old technologies. Alkyd and Lacquer coatings still exist, but their use is steadily declining.
The new coatings are also more durable. No longer relying on lacquer or oxidative drying, the coatings resins can be reacted with amines or isocyanates. The resulting films have better chemical bonds and structures. Higher solids resins, durable pigments, and performance additives can be used to produce better looking finishes. Increased durability can result in lower maintenance costs and less pollution by extending the time between paint jobs.
