Overview

Now you're the structural engineers hired by the architect. They've prepared their concept of the building and provided you with the drawings and their comments about what they think is important. It's your job to select the appropriate structural system, size the major elements and describe it for the rest of the design team.

This project is to be completed in groups that will be assigned by the instructor. You are welcome to consult with your classmates for suggestions - short of direct copying. The grading is on an absolute scale so mutual assistance can only help each group.

You are to deliver a web site which addresses the assignment, ready to be viewed by the class and instructor. Each site should meet the following requirements.

Grading

The following will be be used to assess your success in meeting the project's requirements. Note that each project will be "weighted" as shown on the grading to determine the overall term grade.

General advice - BE SPECIFIC, you'll only get an average grade if you give generalities without specific numbers, details, examples to back up your generality.

Possible Points
System Alternates and Selection Provide quantitative and/or detailed support for the system selection. Document alternative systems considered with verbal description of why one was chosen.

Plans and Sections

Enhanced drawing - possible enhancements include:

  • 3D view
  • Members labeled with sizes
  • Deflection or stress diagrams
  • Connection details
Provide all required drawings with standard labeling. Remember to include foundation information.

Member Sizing

More complete table including maximum deflection and other information.

Document the process used to obtain the member sizing.

Table, keyed to drawing indicating the size of key members, including maximum shear and moments experienced in that member.

Comparison to Program Suggestions for enhancing the original program to make it more helpful to the designer. Comparison of the selected design to the original program with explanation of variations from the original.

Recommendations to Other Designers

More specific suggestions including quantitative information. Documentation by building system of any changes that must/should be made to other building systems as a result of the selected design.
