HVAC & Electrical, Fire & Plumbing Systems
AE Design-II

Overview

Now you're the HVAC, Electrical, Fire & Plubming engineers hired by the architect. The Architect and the structural engineer have already prepared their design concepts. It's your job to select the systems, size the major components and describe it for the rest of the design team.

Details

You are to take the information provided to you by the three previous teams for your building type and prepare HVAC & Electrical designs for the building. In particular you should develop and present at least the following.

HVAC

Electrical (Note that much of this information can come directly from Energy-10)

Fire

Plumbing

Teamwork

This project is to be completed in groups that will be assigned by the instructor. You are welcome to consult with your classmates for suggestions - short of direct copying. The grading is on an absolute scale so mutual assistance can only help each group.

The Teams for this Assignment are defined on this page or may be assigned in class.

Deliverables

You are to deliver a web site which addresses the assignment, ready to be viewed by the class and instructor. Each site should meet the following requirements.

Web Page Requirements

Your assignment site should have at least the following information on it:

Remember to turn in the Assignment to the Submit Assignment database.

Grading

The following will be be used to assess your success in meeting the project's requirements. Note that each project will be "weighted" as shown on the grading to determine the overall term grade.

General advice - BE SPECIFIC, you'll only get an average grade if you give generalities without specific numbers, details, examples to back up your generality.

Criteria
Average Work (60% Approx.)
Excellent Work = Average +

Possible Points

HVAC System Alternates and Selection Document alternative systems considered with verbal description of why one was chosen. Provide quantitative and/or detailed support for the system selection. Include overall system parameters as defined in the detailed section above.

10

HVAC Single Line Diagram

Schematic section showing major elements.

Architectural plan overlain to show location of vertical duct runs.

Enhanced drawing - possible enhancements include:

  • Members labeled with dimensions and capabilities (e.g. 2000CFM or 200 tons)

15

HVAC Component Sizes Table, keyed to drawing indicating the size/rating of key components including - providing key quantitative results

Document the process used to obtain the member sizing.

10

Electrical Single Line Diagram

Schematic section showing major elements.

Architectural plan overlain to show location of vertical chases (may combine with HVAC).

Enhanced drawing - possible enhancements include:

  • Members labeled with dimensions and capabilities (e.g. 480v 3-PHASE or 2000KVA )

15

Electrical Component Sizes Table, keyed to drawing indicating the size/rating of key components including - providing key quantitative results

Document the process used to obtain the member sizing.

10

Fire Protection System Define Each of the major fire protection subsystems, showing them in the building.
  • Provide relevant numeric information about each subsystem.
  • Discuss the interaction with other building systems.
  • Identify what, if anything, is special about this building.

10

Plumbing System Define Each of the major plumbing subsystems, showing them in the building.
  • Provide relevant numeric information about each subsystem.
  • Discuss the interaction with other building systems.
  • Identify what, if anything, is special about this building.

10

Comparison to Program Comparison of the selected design to the original program with explanation of variations from the original. Suggestions for enhancing the original program to make it more helpful to the designer.

10

Recommendations to Other Designers

Documentation by building system of any changes that must/should be made to other building systems as a result of the selected designs. More specific suggestions including quantitative information.

10

Extra Credit Suggestions for improving the assignment (1 pt) Innovative system suggestions.
