The projects in this course will require you to consult with a nonprofit organization in the neighborhood of Drexel University. This consultation is meant to be mutually beneficial: you will see the classroom materials come to life in a real world experience and your nonprofit partner will get some competent feedback and advice about their communication efforts from you. Please be conscious of the fact that in addition to fulfilling a course requirement you will also be acting as an unofficial ambassador for Drexel University, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Culture and Communication, and your instructor. As a regular part of your submission of each project, please forward a copy of your draft to your nonprofit partner.

 

Project 1: Profile of your Nonprofit Organization

Your work on this project will inform the analysis and consultation in Projects 2 and 3. Take time to review the course materials that relate to organizational identity and develop an agenda for interviewing your nonprofit partner. Set up a time, place, and medium for meeting. After the interview, assemble your notes and draft a report that describes the organization. Be sure to include some attention to the organization's values, mission, stakeholders, governance, and means of support. Support all of your assertions with details. (500 to 750 words)

 

Project 2: Analysis of your Nonprofit Organization's Communication Needs

Through consultation with your nonprofit partner begin to collect data on the specific formal communications that the organization engages in with its various stakeholders in order to carry out its mission. Whenever possible, try to acquire copies of these documents. Using the insights about the organization you developed in Project 1, the ideas you discovered from your consultation with your partner, and the prinicples of communication you learned in our course readings, draft an analysis of the organization's primary communication needs. Try to describe the purpose, audience, organization, and style of each document. (500 to 750 words)

 

Project 3: Recommendations for your Nonprofit Organization's Document

Select one of the documets that you analyzed in Project 2. Consult with your nonprofit partner to discover how it was created and to what extent is was successful. Using your description of the organization you developed in Project 1, the ideas you discovered from your consultation with your partner, the prinicples of communication you learned in our course readings, and any insights you remember from our guest speakers, draft a recommendation report in which you offer suggestions for improving the document's content, form, style, and mechanics. (500 to 750 words)
