Tree Squirrels typically feed on seeds and plants, including the stereotypical acorns, but will also eat other things when presented. They will also eat insects, birds eggs and chicks, and leftovers from garbage cans if available. They also will gnaw on bones if given the opportunity. They often store surplus food, but there is no evidence that the Red Squirrels have the cognitive functions to locate their stores at later dates.
