1. What is Friends of the Library?
The Friends of the Kootenai Shoshone Area Libraries is a not for profit group open to library patrons who believe in the importance of reading, listening and viewing information. We strive to stimulate public interest in the library, purchase library materials and support cultural and educational library programs.

2. How does FOL help the libraries?
Friends of the Library funds projects and programs not included in the library system's operating budget, such as educational and cultural programs and innovative library technologies.

3. How is Friends of the Library funded?
Since FOL is not part of the County government or the library system, it raises its own operating funds. FOL raises money through book sales, donations.

4. How is FOL organized?

The FOL works under the direction and within the policies and procedures of the elected KSA Library Board of Trustees. The FOL elects members as President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Officers are elected annually from the membership.

5.Why should I join FOL or make a donation?
Volunteers are the very heart and backbone of the Friends. Their work at the fall and spring book sales is an essesntial part of our success. Joining the Friends ensures the success for all our libraries.

6. When and where do the FOL meet?
The FOL meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 1:00pm at the Hayden Library, 8385 N Government Way, Hayden.

7. How does FOL benefit communities served by the KSA Libraries?
FOL makes our libraries more visible in the communities they serve.

Money rasied by the Friends benefit all the KSA Libraries. FOL provides funding for library programs that go beyond what the Library's annual budget can provide. Grants have included the following support:

  • Children's Summer Reading programs
  • Adult programs
  • Community Outreach programs
  • Author visits
  • Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibits & events
  • Inclement weather book protection sacks
  • Teen Summer Reading programs
  • Teen Read Week events
  • Bookmobile GPS equipment
  • Furniture & equipment
    • Hayden Library flagpole
  • Library staff attendance at the Public Library Association National Conference
  • Annual Library Lions Writing Competition
  • Library outreach picnic at St. Vincent Transitional Housing Shelter

8. How can I help if I cannot attend meetings?
The FOL welcomes help with special projects. Our spring and fall book sales at the Hayden Library always need volunteers with set-up and assisting patrons on sale days.

Shop at the book stores located in each branch library.

Donate your books and other materials to be sold at the libraries. Regardless of where you donate your materials, all libraries benefit.

9. Where are the Book Stores?
The FOL operates its main Book Store in the lobby of the Hayden Library. In addition, each branch library offers a variety of materials for purchase. All Book Stores are open during regular library hours.

10.What type of books and other materials can I donate for sale at the Book Store and other sales?
Donations may be dropped off at any KSA Library. We gladly accept any of the following items for adults and children:

  • Hardcover books
  • Paperback books
  • Videos
  • CD's
  • DVD's
  • Audiobooks
  • Computer software (newer than 2005)
  • Games
  • Puzzles
  • Cassettes

**Items must be clean, dry and without mold. Books must have covers. Donations are tax-deductible; a receipt is available from any KSA Library.
