Sigmund Schlomo Freud's Psychoanalytic theory... in 3 easy steps!

Personality can be divided into the conscious and unconscious

Conscious	The thoughts and ideas that we are aware of and share with the outside world.
Unconscious (Freud's definition)	A reservoir of mostly unacceptable thoughts, desires, feelings and memories.	(contemporary definition) Information processing of which we are unaware.

The unconscious, psychic energy that strives to satisfy basic sexual and aggressive drives.

Superego
The mind's representations of ideals and standards for judgment. (the conscious)

Ego
Seeks to satisfy the needs of the Id, while avoiding pain and prolonging pleasure.

Psychosexual stages of development

Pleasure focuses on mouth.

Biting, sucking, chewing.

Anal stage (18-36 mos.)
Pleasure focuses on bowels and bladder.

Child copes with demands for control.

Phallic stage (3-6 years)
Pleasure focuses on genitals.

Child copes with incestuous sexual feelings and develops gender identity.

Is there a Superego?

Present words that are barely perceptible by the conscious,but are perceived by the unconscious.
Responses that produced errors are suppressed. Suppressed words are conflict/sexual words.
If there is a preponderance of conflict/sexual errors (or more neutral items correct), the Superego lives!!!

Procedure

After word is presented, type response (even if you're not sure, type SOMETHING).
Half of words are conflict/sexual; others are neutral.
When test is completed, score the results
find errors
determine if they're conflict/sexual errors, or neutral errors
tally score for each group
subtract each total from 32 THIS IS THE CORRECT ITEMS SCORE

Running the subliminal experiment

On the MacLab CD...
open Ä Personality and Social;
open Ä Psychodynamic Activation;
launch Subliminal Test
Keep alert, they'll come quickly!!

Assignment: Write an introduction section for the experiment. Include a References section.

Introduction

Provide background information on theory and concepts (conscious, unconsciousness; triarchic theory of mind; subliminal activation paradigm.)
Lay the groundwork, then set the stage to end the introduction with the experimental hypothesis.
Include at least 2 sources, using citation conventions per APA Guidelines as outlined in MacLab Manual. (e.g., Myers; class lecture)
