In my senior year of highschool, Show Business is My Life is the solo album of Mr. T Experience (MTX) front man Dr. Frank. I wasn't the biggest MTX fan, but I bought all their albums and saw them play every time they came to Sacramento. I was familiar with Dr. Frank's song writing style and liked it. The main reason I bought the CD on the day it was released (from Tower Records on Watt Avenue) was because The Hi-Fives played on one of the songs, and as the number one Hi-Fives fan I had to have it.
During my first semester of college at Berkeley, Show Business is My Life took on a new meaning for me. For one thing, I really appreciated the dry wit and humour of the songs. It seemed like Dr. Frank was channeling George Jones for most of the record. It also made me see that there was nothing really stopping me from being able to sing. Up until this point, I never really sang in any band I'd been in because I thought I had a horrible voice. Dr. Frank's singing voice isn't the greatest, but he sells every song. This album made me realise that I could do that as well. Shortly after this epiphany I started playing guitar semi-seriously and began performing. It's silly but true.
