can of pork

can of pork!

I bought Can of Pork when I was in eigth grade from The Beat in Sacramento. I didn't really know most of the bands on the record at the time, but I did know that it was from Lookout! Records and The Horny Mormons were legends in the Sacramento Punk scene.

Of the bands I had heard on the compilation, it was pretty much just Lagwagon (whom I didn't really like), The Lookouts (which featured Tre Cool from Green Day and Larry Livermore of Lookout!), and The Mr. T Experience (who I had seen once). One of my friends, an older and wiser punk, had recommended I get the record as a good foundation. They were right. I listened to all four sides of it repeatedly, so that each band and song became a standard for me. Most of these bands have slipped into obscurity whilst some, like Pinhead Gunpowder, Lagwagon, and Downfall (who became Rancid) went on to relative fame and popularity.

Can of Pork was the first punk rock compilation I bought, and really the first independent punk record in my collection. It started my buying frenzy at shows and my campaign to buy almost everything from the Lookout! Records catalog. This lead to many other favourite artists and to getting ivolved with the local scene. It could be said, if it wasn't for this record I wouldn't have moved to Berkeley for college and worked at KALX.

It should also be noted that Brent's T.V. is on this record. They feature John Denery and Chris Imlay of The Hi-Fives.
