Welcome, and thank you for visiting my web site.  Here you will find information about my professional background, current research, and teaching philosophy, as well as a collection of selected papers.

My research fundamentally concerns the behavior and performance of complex geosystems and materials over a range of scales.  My principle interests include the areas of (1) geohazards, including the coupling of earthquakes and landslides, (2) geotechnical composite systems, and (3) sustainable geotechnics.  Throughout my work I apply a wide range of analytical, numerical, empirical and experimental techniques, from model-based simulations of earth structures to advanced multiaxial testing of geosynthetics.  My approach to research is to first identify and understand the fundamental mechanisms that govern the response of systems and materials, and then to use this information to develop improved modeling procedures, predictive tools and design methodologies.  An important facet of my research involves the development and analysis of case studies, which have provided many critical insights and keeps my work grounded in reality.  Having served in industry for five years before joining academia, I am sensitive to need for innovative yet pragmatic solutions to real problems, and I place emphasis on the practical implications of my work.   More information about my research can be found on my projects page.
