How Steroids Affect Sports- The use of steroids in sports is unfair, unethical, and should not be allowed. Using steroids is a form of cheating and interferes with fair competition. Players who use steroids to play sports usually have an unfair advantage compared to the other players. Steroids are performance-enhancing drugs that when taken by a person, they make them perform a lot better at that sport. In the case of wrestling, anabolic steroids build bulk; they put on extra muscles, so they make you bigger and stronger. For baseball players, anabolic steroids improve visual-spatial function. Visual-spatial function improves the way baseball players hit home runs because these players can wait long enough that they can commit a millionth of a second longer into their swing, which results in a better hit of the ball. For pitchers, steroids improve the muscles in the arms, which results in the pitcher being able to throw the ball much faster and have better endurance during the game. Steroids usually improve performance by one percent, but in professional sports, that one percent gives an athlete an edge over the other players. Athletes who have used anabolic steroids, as well as some coaches, trainers and physicians report a significant increase in lean muscle mass, strength, and endurance. |
