What Do I Want From This Class?
This assignment gave us the opportunity to explain our goals during this class. I’ve done HTML design for about the last decade. I started when I was about 11 when I got a book about web design. I don’t think there were any WYSIWYG HTML editors back then, just the equivalent of Notepad that would lay out the basic tags for you. From there, I started using Netscape Composer, which was much better. When my dad, who runs a community theater group (as I said in the “Who Am I?” assignment), wanted to make a webpage for the group, I became the webmaster. I did that for several years, using several different kinds of navigation and content arrangement. I’ve basic links, framesets, and now drop-down menus for each of the sites I’ve created. In 2001, around the same time I was working on the theater group site, I began working on my own personal site. It contains humor writing that I’ve done by myself and with my friends, but it has become probably my best teacher in terms of understanding what works on a website and what doesn’t. I’ve mostly used Dreamweaver MX 2004 for that site at this point. So, to begin to answer your question, I’m not looking to learn HTML design, like many students in this class. I know how to design web pages. I guess what I want from this class is to learn to make the pages I design look more professional. The pages I’ve created are by no means basic, but I’m sure they could use some design improvements. Mostly aesthetic changes, I would hope. But I’m looking forward to creating my own site for this class, because it gives me the chance to experiment with some techniques I’ve been meaning to try but didn’t seem right for the sites I work on. In short, I want this class to make me a better web designer. Websites I Have Designed: Feel free to check out either of these sites which I have designed since learning HTML. Indigo Retina's Site O' Stuff This is my personal website, hosted by Geocities. Unfortunately, it is encumbered by pop-up ads, do to the free account. However, it does not take away from the overall design and content of the site. Created about 5 years ago, this site has gone through many iterations, including one with frames, and has seen almost every conceivable type of navigation scheme. I designed the current version using Adobe Photoshop/ImageReady and Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004. The Actors Group Web Site This site was designed for my father's community theater group. This too has gone through several versions. One notable aspect of this site is the use of embedded Flash for the picture galleries, albeit using a pre-made template. The newest version was designed using Dreamweaver, though I have used Frontpage and Netscape Composer for older versions. |
