DIRECTORIES

targeting companies directly

Not all library jobs are advertised on the internet. To ensure you don't miss any good opportunities, you should create a list of places you'd like to work and target those companies directly.

You may already have a short list of places you'd like to target. That's great! Be sure to place them at the top of your list. To identify additional companies you'll need to use a company directory.

databases

Nowadays many company directories come in the form of electronic databases. D&B Million Dollar Database, Hoover's Online and ReferenceUSA are some of the most popular databases for finding company information. Note: These resources are very expensive. Check your local library to see which they subscribe to.

Once you've located a database, use it to search for companies in your geographic location and industry of choice. Use SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) or NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes to designate your desired industry.

Here are some industries and corresponding codes for librarians:

Industry
SIC
NAICS
Libraries & Information Centers / Libraries & Archives 8231 51912
Colleges, Universities & Professional Schools 8221 6113
Elementary & Secondary Schools 8211 6111

After you've generated a list, visit each company's website to learn more about them and search for job openings. If you can't find any jobs posted, call the human resources department to inquire about employment opportunities. You'll be surprised how many additional job openings you find by targeting companies directly!
