The
security system for MacAlister Hall is fairly new in age. The presence
of some sort of system was needed when theft and vandalism plagued this
building and others around it. The fact that all Drexel Buildings are
twenty-four accessible, the system had to provide twenty-four surveillance for
everyday of the year that gave each student a sense of protection without
making them feel like they attend a prison. Security for Building 9B or
MacAlister Hall is accomplished in two (2) levels, the building perimeter and
internal. The building exterior doors are secured and alarmed with door
contacts. The main entrance and the loading dock have a card reader monitored
by the Division of Security Operations. There are around the clock foot,
bicycle and vehicle patrols by SPECTRA guard and occasionally the
Philadelphia
Police Department of the above Drexel Grid. Emergency Call Boxes have
been strategically placed throughout the campus for the safety of the Drexel
Community. The Emergency Call Boxes, when activated, automatically
contact the Drexel University Public Safety Dispatch Center, notifying the
Public Safety Dispatcher of the caller's exact location. Students
and staff are encouraged to learn the location of the emergency call boxes and
to use them for all security and emergency communications. Internal
security is monitored by the building automation computer and at the front
desk by the security guard. Internal security refers to any card access
required within the building, such as into the Audio Visual Room. The internal
security system is accomplished by using proximity sensors, cards and
video cameras. The cameras are typically placed in the elevator space
allocation. Some cameras are placed throughout the building, where
sensitive and vulnerable equipment are stored.
Some of the program spaces allocated within the building are protected
with programmable keypads.
