VSST 201 - MULTIMEDIA PERFORMANCE

Course Description
In this course, students will investigate four dimensional design (the organization of space over time) using objects, light, sound, movement, gesture, and language in individual and group presentations.

HNRS 202 - ACRYLIC PAINTING

Course Description
In this course, students will explore the potential of a variety of "content" oriented art-making strategies, such as the production of serial images, the use of repetition, and technical procedures ranging from controlled to chance manipulation of materials, as a means of spontaneous image development and visual self discovery.

This course will take advantage of the fast drying quality of water-based mediums to work rapidly with emphasis on immediacy, directness and spontaneity in the process of painting. Class time will consist of conceptual and aesthetic orientation, exposure to material and technical possibilities, in-class work and critiques to set the spirit and pace for ongoing work outside of class.

HNRS 201 - FAIRMOUNT PARK

Course Description
This course* will use Fairmount Park as subject and classroom. The Fairmount Park system encompasses seven watershed areas in its 9,000 square miles and a huge variety of spaces in which to work, including Bartram's Garden, Roosevelt Park, The Wissahickon Valley, Center City Squares, The River Drives, Penn Treaty Park, hundreds of neighborhood parks and an urban street tree system. Rich in resources (ecological, biological, historical, architectural, recreational, etc.), the park is currently overseeing numerous research / restoration / documentation projects spanning many disciplines.

Goals / Objectives
Site visits to natural areas and man-made structures in the park
Site visits to "project locations"
Team Research Projects of value to Fairmount park programs
Writing in the form of proposals, journals, data collecting
Visual documentation in the form of drawing, video, still photography, etc.
History / Literature in the form of guest lectures, student presentations and research

 

VSST 399 - SENIOR ARTIST PROJECT

Course Description
Several training sessions with professionals will help the student take inventory of the artist's work, record oral history of his/her career and participate in a short videography session documenting the same. The artist/subject and student(s) create a mutually convenient schedule for meeting in the studio where most of the coursework takes place. All locations are in Center City, Philadelphia. Videographers will be provided. The project starts late January and culminates in early May for a total of 60 hours experience. Registration is in winter term.

Other participants in this project include associates of Woodmere Art Museum, Moore College of Art & Design, Fleisher Art Memorial, James Michener Art Museum, Jeffrey Fuller Fine Art Ltd., University of the Arts, Temple University-Tyler School of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.
