Application of Variable-Disc
PivotRotor to Tilt Rotor Aircraft
ABSTRACT
Although tilt rotor
aircraft can fill the full helicopter flight envelope from take-off
through horizontal flight to landing, in airplane flight mode
the tilt rotor aircraft cannot fill the full airplane flight envelope.
Ground interference between the forward-tilted rotor precludes
normal rolling take-offs and landings. Moreover, because the rotor
disc area is significantly greater than that required for optimum
propeller effectiveness, forward flight efficiency suffers.
Unlike telescoping
blades which require major modifications in blade design, the
proprietary PivotRotor described herein is designed to decrease
the propeller disc diameter to increase both tilt-rotor efficiency
and versatility without significantly affecting blade construction
