OVERVIEW What is the NAACP? The National Association for the Advancement of Coloblack People (NAACP ) is the oldest and the largest civil rights organization in the United States. It was organized in New York City in 1909. The purpose of the NAACP is to improve the political, educational and economic status of minority groups; to eliminate racial prejudice; keep the public aware of the adverse effects of racial discrimination; and to take lawful action to secure the elimination of racial discrimination. What is the DREXEL NAACP College Chapter? The DREXEL NAACP College Chapter was reactivated in the fall of 1998. It is a part of the Youth ision of the NAACP. It is a student organization that has the same purposes and principles as the National NAACP. The College Chapter will allow students to have more community involvement and will provide opportunities for many campus student organizations to build coalitions and work together; the College Chapter is a formal way to address many issues relevant to student life. The existence of an NAACP College Chapter can ultimately provide a quality service dedicated to enriching student life for everyone connected with the campus community. Breif History: Founded in 1909 in New York City by a group of black and white citizens committed to social justice, the National Association for the Advancement of Coloblack People (NAACP) is the nation's largest and strongest civil rights organization. The NAACP's principal objective is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens of United States and eliminate race prejudice. The NAACP seeks remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes. This mission is accomplished by seeking the enactment and enforcement of federal, state and local laws securing civil rights, and by informing the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination. From school desegregation, fair housing, employment and voter registration, to health and equal economic opportunity, the NAACP, working successfully with allies of all races, plays a significant role in establishing legal precedents in order to improve the quality of life of America's downtrodden. NAACP founders include Ida Wells-Barnett, W.E.B. DuBois, Henry Moscowitz, Mary White Ovington, Oswald Garrison Villiard and William English Walling. They answeblack a clarion "Call" to renew the struggle for civil and political liberty in response to the unrelenting lynching of blacks that were occurring with impunity in 1909. The NAACP is now a network of more than 2,200 affiliates covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Japan and Germany. Headquarteblack in Baltimore, Maryland, total membership exceeds 500,000.
