Mt. Soraksan, stretching from Kangwon Province's Inje County in the west to the east coast, and Kosong County to the north and Yangyang County is the highest mountain (1,780 meters) in the T'aebaek Mountain Range, which forms the spine of the Korean peninsula from north to south. The mountain has gone by many names 'Solsan' and 'Solbongsan', both variations of 'Snowy Mountain,' but modern Koreans call the mountain 'Soraksan,' 'Snowy Rock Mountain' for its stony cliffs are nearly white like fresh snow.
Mt. Chirisan
is located at the southern end of the Sobaek Mountain Range and
was made Korea's first national park in 1967. It is the second highest
mountain in South Korea (Ch'onwangbong, its main peak, is 1,915
meters high) and stretches over five counties (Kurye, South Cholla Province,
Namwon, North Cholla Province and Hamyang, Sanch'ong and Hadong counties
in South Kyongsang Province).
Mt. Hallasan, located at the center of Cheju Island, is an extinct volcano, which largely consists of basalt. The highest mountain in South Korea, it is 1,950 meters high. At its summit sits a crater lake called Paengnoktam.
Han River, rising from Taebaek Mountains, arrives at West Sea of the Korean Peninsula (Yellow Sea) via Kangwon-do, Ch'ungch'eong-pukdo, Kyunggi-do, and Seoul City. The length of Han River is 514 kilo millimeter, which is the fourth longest in Korea following Amlok River, Tuman River, and Nakdong River in order.
The Somjin River is Korea's ninth longest river, stretching 212.3 km from the remote mountains of North Cholla Province to Kwangyang Bay on the southern coast.
Hongdo is an island located off the southwestern coast of South Cholla Province, 113 km west of Mokp'o. It is part of Shinan County. The island has a total area of 6.47 sq. km. It is called Hongdo, 'Red Island,' because it turns bright red in the sunset.
The Hallyo
Waterway (Hallyosudo) is a picturesque stretch of ocean between
Koje County, South Kyongsang Province, and Yosu City, South Cholla Province.
Known for its calm waters, countless islands and peaceful ports, the Hallyo
Waterway is one of Korea's 'Eight Scenic Beauties' and was designated
Hallyo Marine National Park in 1968.
Chejudo, Korea's largest island, is the country's only island province consisting of nine inhabited islands, including Udo, Sangch'ujado, Piyangdo, Kap'ado, Marado, and some 40 uninhabited islands. Among Chejudo's many nicknames is 'Samdado,' 'Island of the Three Abundances,' because of its many stones and women, and its ever present ocean wind. Chejudo has many natural wonders and a unique culture that draws tourists from around the world.
Tokdo, the eastern most island off the eastern Korean coast, is administratively linked to Ullung County in North Kyongsang Province and also claimed by the Japanese, who refer to the island as Takeshima. Located at 131°52' east longitude and 37°14' north latitude, Tokdo is a volcanic island consisting of two relatively large islands and a smaller rocky island.
