The
best thing about college basketball has got to
be the rivalries, think about some of the great
ones: Duke vs. UNC, Kentucky vs. Louisville, Indiana
vs. Purdue, even Penn vs. Princeton. It seems
that every school has their hated “rival”
– even my high school had Marian Catholic
just a couple of miles away. When you play these
teams even the students who could care less about
sports still come out to watch, it gives you a
sense of pride to beat your rival, not to mention
bragging rights.

On Monday night,
the 24th, the Dragons will take a short walk down
33rd Street to the storied Palestra and take on
the University of Pennsylvania Quakers. Last season
the Dragons handily defeated a UPenn team that
would eventually go undefeated in the less than
stellar Ivy League before being taken out in the
first round of the NCAA tournament by Oklahoma
State. That Penn team had me worried, they were
a solid group with some real threats, Ugonna Onyekwe
was a potential NBA draft pick, Koko Archibong
played the perfect second-fiddle to Onyekwe and
Andy Toole was an outstanding point guard. All
three earned All-Ivy League honors last season.

The Class of
2007 looks to build upon what the Class of 2003
left behind, including an NIT appearance. Last
year’s senior class consisted of three players,
two of whom were all league performers. That leaves
some big shoes to fill. Hopefully this year’s
freshmen can at least partly fill those shoes.
The Class of 2007 includes center/forward Chaz
Crawford (6-9 200lbs from Philadelphia, PA), forward
Matt Stevenson (6-7 200lbs from Towson, MD), guard
Bashir Mason (6-0 180lbs from Jersey City, NJ),
guard Maurice Madden (6-0 180lbs from North Hills,
PA) and guard Jake Rauchbach (5-11 165 lbs from
Chapel Hill, NC).

Better Have Big Feet
The Drexel men’s basketball team does not
have a whole lot of question marks coming into
this season. After all, they return nearly all
of their players from a team that came within
a 5 minute mental lapse of making it to the big
dance last season. The Dragons return three starters
and nearly everyone else from that team. So do
they have a lot of question marks? No, in fact
the Dragons have just two questions marks, although
they’re more like ?!?!?!?!.
