Kenell Sanchez came off the bench to score a career
high 21 points and help lead Drexel to an 89-72 win
over Quinnipiac at the DAC on December 9th. Sanchez
also added 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Kenell was replaced
in the starting lineup, by freshman Bashir Mason, in
an effort to get the struggling Drexel offense rolling.
The change worked, even despite a slow start, as the
Dragons rebounded from two tough losses to shoot over
51% from the floor (48% from 3 point range).
Phil Goss also came up big for Drexel, adding in a
career high 25 points including a perfect 4-4 from three
in the second half. Goss had struggled in the previous
two games, but remained patient and let his shot come
to him against the Bobcats. Mason (7 points, 7 rebounds
and 6 assists), making his first career start, continued
to play well for the improving Dragons. Once Mason learns
to limit his turnovers and fouls, he will become one
of the better point guards in the CAA. After struggling
last season, Tim Whitworth (12 points, 5-7 from the
field) continues to shoot well and has even been more
aggressive going to the basket this year.
The Drexel defense was solid against C. J. Vick (Michael’s
cousin) and the Bobcats, so much so that Quinnipiac
only hit one jump shot in the entire first half. The
Dragons solid rebounding (46-31), also limited the Bobcats
offensive opportunities. Even though Sean Brooks didn’t
have one of his better games offensively, he amassed
15 of those rebounds. Drexel also limited their turnovers
down the stretch, allowing them to put away preseason
NEC favorite Quinnipiac.
The young Dragons team is now 2-3 overall heading
into their game against nationally ranked St. Joseph’s
at the Palestra on Sunday December 14th. Come out to
support the Dragons and see if they can pull off one
of the greatest upsets in school history.
