Neither snow nor the Colgate defense could stop the
high-flying Drexel offense as they soared to an 89-84
win in Hamilton, New York, on Saturday November 29th.
The weather outside was cold, but the Dragons offense
was on fire as they shot over 59% from the field. Sean
Brooks netted a career best 20 points and Tim Whitworth
got back on track with 19 points. The Dragons also got
their usual steady scoring from Kenell Sanchez (15 points),
Phil Goss (15 points), and Jeremiah King (11 points).
Balanced scoring early in the season has made Drexel
a difficult team to defend.
Drexel jumped out to a 7-0 lead in their first road
game year and never looked back. Colgate made several
runs, but each time the Dragons responded and a Goss
three pointer finally finished off the Red Raiders.
The Dragons reduced their turnovers and fouls from the
first game, allowing for a more efficient offensive
performance.
Drexel did continue to struggle in several aspects
of the game. The players are still trying to find their
roles on defense in the absence of Robert Battle and
Eric Schmieder. The Dragons were also out rebounded
for the second straight game, although the margin was
much closer than the Penn game. Both of these problems
have reduced the Drexel fast break offense, which has
been so effective the last few years.
Although the Dragons aren’t clicking on all cylinders
yet, picking up a road win is always important and especially
when it’s the first victory of the season. Last
season a veteran Drexel team lost two similar road games
(Quinnipiac and Niagara). There is a mix of experience
and youth on this year’s team and once everyone
settles into their roles, the Dragons will really be
a force to be reckoned with.
