Club History Drexel University Circle K was first recognized as a student organization by the Office of Student Activities in the summer of 2000 lead by Pat Bradley and Sorin Roibu. In the fall of 2000, the club got started and with a little hard work, became chartered in December of 2000 under the leadership of Justin Lathia, Charles Stehman, Roger Swartz, Cesca Olivera, and Sorin Roibu. In the first year alone, Drexel Circle K completed over 900 hours of community service and led an alternative spring break. The highlight of the club was being recognized as the February Student Organization of the Month by the Office of Student Activity. Over the past several years, the club has made strides and expanded the membership as well as the projects. Drexel Circle K recently made history with a 150-person community service project at Fairmount Park. The club is still young and growing so get involved, make your mark, and be a part of history.
What is Circle K? Circle K International is the world's largest collegiate coed service organization. It is more than just a volunteer service organization, however. CKI holds the promise of today's college student becoming tomorrow's leader and exists to meet the personal growth needs of the individual collegian through the qualities of leadership, the rewards of service, and a unique spirit of friendship. Simply stated, the objective of its members is to provide altruistic service to the campus and community while having fun, building long-lasting friendships, and developing leadership skills. Circle K's potential lies in its ability to positively influence those in our society who are meeting personal challenges and those who will one day create the vision of mankind for generations to come. Circle K members are the embodiment of those qualities necessary to shape the future. The vision of Circle K International is dedicated to the realization of mankind's potential. CKI is truly an international organization with over 11,000 members from approximately 550 clubs in 12 countries. It is also a part of a much larger organization: Kiwanis International. KI is a worldwide service organization composed of civic leaders who have the desire to become personally involved in making their communities better places to live. Kiwanis Clubs sponsor Builders Clubs in junior high schools, Key Clubs in high schools, and Circle K Clubs in colleges and universities. Through the sponsored youth committee, these Kiwanis Clubs offer advice, manpower assistance, and financial support to their younger counterparts. Together, Kiwanis, Builders Club, Key Club, and CKI make up the K-Family.
Circle K International Pledge "I pledge to uphold the objects of Circle K International, to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through service and leadership, to develop my abilities and the abilities of all people, and to dedicate myself to the realization of mankind’s potential."
Circle K International is a not-for-profit organization. Membership dues fund the operations, programs, and events sponsored by the organization. Although Kiwanis clubs have no financial obligation at the club and district level, many Kiwanis clubs and districts provide a subsidy to Circle K budgets to enhance the level of services offered and to minimize the costs to Circle K members. Each Circle K member is required to pay club, district, and International dues. Club dues are determined each year by the club board of officers. Club dues pay for administrative costs associated with running the club. District dues are used to cover the costs of supporting a district board of officers, and district sponsored events for club members. International dues fund the operations of the Circle K International Board of Trustees, club resources and materials, the CIRCLE K Magazine, leadership and education programs, district support materials, maintenance of the International office, award programs, and Kiwanis family events. Even though our club does not require volunteers to pay dues in order to participate in our events, it is required for many functions within our club. Only dues-paying members who are officially recognized by Circle K International are allowed to hold an office in our club, and non-dues-paying members are also barred from any voting or elections within the club. A dues-paying member can participate in the various district and internationally-sponsored leadership and education programs. Furthermore, scholarship awards given out by Circle K International can also be applied for by its members. Finally, only dues-paying members have the proud honor of putting on their resume that they are an official member of the world's largest international community service organization. |
