PrerequisitesTo be registered for the CSA, you must have passed Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), or its equivalent, and satisfied the English language proficiency requirement for ECFMG certification. You must also meet certain medical education requirements. See Question 1 in the Common Questions section for more information. Complete information on CSA eligibility requirements is available in the ECFMG Information Booklet. You are required to read the appropriate edition of the Information Booklet before applying for the CSA. ApplicationYou can apply for the CSA on-line using ECFMG's Interactive Web Application (IWA). You can also complete a paper application (Form 706) and send it to ECFMG by mail (or courier service). Form 706 is available on the Publications Page of this website and from ECFMG, upon request. Payment of the CSA fee is due at the time of application. Detailed application instructions accompany the application. Follow the instructions carefully and answer all questions completely. You should review these instructions before you begin working on the application. Some of the necessary items require advance planning. These items include photographs, official signatures, and additional documentation, such as copies of your medical diploma. If your application is not complete, it will be rejected. After you are registered, ECFMG will mail your notification of registration for the CSA. Examinees with Documented DisabilitiesThe CSA Centers are wheelchair accessible, and reasonable accommodations will be made for the administration of the CSA to candidates with documented disabilities. To apply for test accommodations, you must obtain a copy of the packet entitled Guidelines and Questionnaire: Requests for Test Accommodations for Examinees with Disabilities Taking the Clinical Skills Assessment. This packet is available on the Publications Page of this website and from ECFMG, upon request. Your request for accommodations, including the completed Questionnaire and supporting documentation, should be made as soon as possible, and must be received at ECFMG no later than your CSA application. If you apply on-line, you must submit this information at the time you submit your completed Certification Statement. Scheduling an assessment date means that you accept ECFMG's conditions for the assessment; therefore, no requests for test accommodations will be accepted after scheduling has occurred. When the CSA is administered with test accommodations, score reports and transcripts may include an annotation that an accommodation was granted. Requests should be sent to the following address: ECFMG SchedulingYou may schedule your assessment date as soon as you receive notification that you have been registered. You must schedule an assessment date within four months of the date indicated on your notification of registration. You must take the CSA within twelve months of the date indicated on your notification of registration. Your notification of registration will indicate clearly the dates by which you must schedule and take the CSA. Once you schedule an assessment date, you cannot change it. If you do not schedule your CSA within four months of and take the CSA within twelve months of the date indicated on your notification of registration, you will lose your payment for the assessment, and you will need to reapply, including payment of the assessment fee, to take the CSA. You can schedule an assessment date on-line by accessing CSA Candidate Scheduling on the ECFMG website. If you do not have access to the Internet, you may telephone (215) 970-1982 (Monday through Friday, 0800-2400 EST) to have an operator assist you with scheduling. Please note, however, that scheduling operators only assist in scheduling and cannot answer other questions or provide additional information regarding the CSA or ECFMG. They will refer such inquiries to ECFMG's Applicant Information Services at (215) 386-5900. When you schedule, you will verify your name and provide your USMLE/ECFMG identification number and date of birth, as it appears on your notification of registration. During scheduling, you will be provided with information on the location of your assessment and available assessment dates. When you schedule an assessment date, you will receive a confirmation number. Assessment dates and sessions are opened depending on demand. If no acceptable dates are available when you first attempt to schedule, you may decide not to schedule at that time. You may check again later to find out if additional dates or sessions have opened. However, within four months of the date indicated on your notification of registration, you are still required to select an assessment date. ECFMG will mail your CSA admission permit on the next business day following the date that you schedule. You must bring the admission permit to the CSA Center on the date of your assessment. Information on travel to and lodging near the CSA Center will be included with your admission permit. This information is also available on the Publications Page of this website. Every effort will be made to accommodate your scheduling preferences. However, due to the volume of candidates and limited capacity, ECFMG cannot guarantee the availability of specific dates you may request. In recent years, demand for CSA testing spaces in the months preceding the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) has exceeded the number of testing spaces available. Eligible applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for and take the CSA as early as possible. It is solely the responsibility of the applicant to complete the CSA in time to meet deadlines imposed by the NRMP and/or GME programs. Since the number of candidates seeking to complete the CSA may exceed the spaces available in time to meet those deadlines, there is no guarantee that sufficient spaces will be available for all candidates to meet deadlines imposed by the NRMP and/or GME programs. ECFMG assumes no liability of any kind if a candidate does not complete the CSA in time to meet NRMP and/or GME program deadlines. CSA Center LocationsThe CSA is administered at the following locations:
Information on the location of your assessment will be available during the CSA scheduling process. CSA Cancellation and Rescheduling PoliciesOnce you schedule an assessment date, you cannot reschedule or cancel it. If you fail to schedule an assessment date within four months of the date indicated on your notification of registration, or fail to take the CSA within one year of this date, you will not receive a refund or credit of the assessment fee, and you will be required to reapply, including payment of the assessment fee, to take the CSA. CSA applicants who are unable to obtain the appropriate visa to enter the United States to take the CSA may request a full refund of the assessment fee. Appeals for exceptions to the cancellation and rescheduling policies based on other extraordinary circumstances are considered on a case-by-case basis. In all cases, candidates wishing to appeal should submit a completed CSA Scheduling Exceptions Appeal Form (Form 745) and documentation, as described in Form 745, to ECFMG. Form 745 is available on the Publications Page of this website and from ECFMG, upon request. If you wish to change your scheduled CSA date, your appeal must be received at ECFMG at least thirty days before the scheduled assessment date to be considered. If the appeal relates to a scheduled CSA session for which you did not appear, your appeal must be received at ECFMG no later than thirty days after your scheduled assessment date to be considered.
