ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION


The ECFMG® Information Booklet contains detailed information on ECFMG's program of certification and ECFMG's other programs and services for international medical students and graduates. The 2004 edition of the Information Booklet is associated with corresponding application materials for Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (Step 2 CK) of the United States Medical Licensing Examination™ (USMLE™) and the ECFMG Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA®).

Applicants for examination must use the appropriate edition of the Information Booklet / application materials.

  • USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK. The 2004 Information Booklet and USMLE Step 1 / Step 2 CK application materials pertain to eligibility periods for the Step 1 and Step 2 CK exams that have an ending date in 2004. If you plan to apply for a Step 1 or Step 2 CK eligibility period that ends in 2005, you must use the 2005 Information Booklet / application materials. The 2005 Information Booklet / application materials are expected to be available in August 2004. See Eligibility Period for more information on eligibility periods.


  • ECFMG CSA. The 2004 Information Booklet and CSA application materials pertain to the ECFMG CSA through spring 2004, when CSA administrations are expected to end. In mid-2004, USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills (Step 2 CS) will replace the ECFMG CSA as the exam that satisfies the clinical skills requirement for ECFMG Certification. (See below.)

New For 2004USMLE Step 2 CS. The Clinical Skills component of Step 2 (Step 2 CS) will be implemented in mid-2004. Unless otherwise indicated, the policies and procedures described in this booklet refer to the Step 2 Clinical Knowledge component (Step 2 CK), the current Step 2 exam. Refer to this website for Step 2 CS policies, procedures, and application materials.

The USMLE Bulletin of Information provides information about the United States Medical Licensing Examination, the single, three-step examination program for medical licensure in the United States. The USMLE Bulletin of Information is available on this website, the USMLE website at www.usmle.org, and from ECFMG, upon request. In the event that information about the USMLE in the ECFMG Information Booklet differs from the corresponding information in the USMLE Bulletin of Information, the information in the USMLE Bulletin of Information shall govern.

Applicants for ECFMG Certification are required to read both the ECFMG Information Booklet and the USMLE Bulletin of Information.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Although current at the time of publication, the information contained in this booklet is subject to change. The ECFMG website provides the most up-to-date information on the topics covered in the ECFMG Information Booklet. Any changes to the information in the ECFMG Information Booklet will be posted on this website. You must obtain the most up-to-date information to ensure an accurate understanding of current policies and procedures.
