Discarded Legacy: Politics and Poetics in the Life of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper
A Panel Discussion with: Lena Ampadu, Melba Joyce Boyd and Sonia Sanchez
The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Wednesday, February 23, 2011
Sonia Sanchez, Professor DeLancey, Lois Casey, and Drexel students of African-American Literature at Moonstone Center for the Arts' Frances E.W. Harper Memorial Festival, an extended celebration of the life and work of African-American Historical Poet, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, during the week of the one hundredth anniversary of her death. Frances E. W. Harper was a 19th Century abolitionist poet whose work courageously defended the rights of African-Americans and women, but remains relevant across all social spheres, class systems, and birth circumstances. Sonia Sanchez graciously greeted the throng of young minds, calling them her brothers and sisters, with soft, knowledgeable encouragement after performing her memorial poem, "Thunder of an Angel".
