Tips for Researching and Choosing an Insurance Company
What to Look for when Shopping for Insurance -
As you approach the end of your teen years and early 20s as a student, ive learned more about financial resposbility and selecting an insurance company. It's important to know what steps to take and how to make sure that you don't choose someone based on the wrong reasons. Choosing a bad insurance company is an easy enough mistake to make and often results from nothing more than failure to obtain the information needed to make an informed decision. Listed below are some things you can do in order to make sure you have enough information to choose a good insurance company and/or agent.
- Conduct research on at least five different companies before coming to a final decision. Make a list of questions that you want answered before you contact the company in case all of the information is not available on their website. You want to select things such as rates, surcharges related to your age and gender, how they treat accidents that are your fault, do they have accident forgiveness, and do your premiums begun reducing after you reach a certain age. Several services now adays will offer quotes from several companies. Use this to your advantage.
- After you have selected five companies that peak your interest, conduct some in depth research - including calling local agents who underwrite for those companies - to find out what their experiences are with that company. You don't want to make any quick decisions when it comes to an insurance company, and you also don't necessarily want to work with a local agent—sometimes you can get better quotes/rates if you sign up online.
- With each company you research, look at every service they offer for the price they charge. Remember, it is not always the cheapest company that is the best company. In the event that the coverage is similar or identical, you will of course choose the company with the lowest price, but you want to make sure first.
- Check the reputation of each company and how long they have been in business. Be wary of those who have only been licensed for a short time or those who were once independent and have been taken over by a large insurance company.
- Your final decision should be based upon your findings after doing all of the research. Do not rush to make a decision about something as important as automobile insurance.
It may seem like a great deal of work to choose something as simple as an auto insurance company, but remember that this is a commodity not only to protect you but also to protect the lives and property of anyone with whom you have an accident. It's important to know that if an accident happens, you are fully covered and can file a claim without an overabundance of red tape. Just because you are a teenager does not mean that you do not deserve to be treated with the same courtesy and consideration of an adult when it comes to an accident claim.
Avoid using companies who will automatically think it is your fault because you are a teen. You will find this sometimes with insurance companies who may at first appear to be teen-friendly when it comes to insuring you, but their rates show they consider teens the cause of any accident in which you are involved. This is one reason it is so important to compare quotes & rates for similar coverage with different insurance companies. Only by conducting your own research will you find out for yourself the company that is best for you. Certainly you are free to seek the advice of your parents after you have conducted research, but be in a position to make your own decision concerning the company you will pay to insure your car.
