Biblio-Phrugality: (n) The saving of money and natural resources by buying used books instead of new ones, particularly at the wonderful secondhand booksellers in the City of Philadelphia.

This website seeks to emphasize frugality, wise spending, recycling/re-use of materials, and supporting independent merchants by promoting secondhand bookstores in Philadelphia. Of course, the most frugal option is to take advantage of the wonderful free resources offered by the Free Library of Philadelphia, but if you want to buy books for gifts or collecting, there are many excellent independently-owned bookstores throughout the city.

Each bookstore is reviewed by the Phrugal Librarian and presented in a list according to Philadelphia neighborhood. The goal is to present the most useful information about store stock, materials offered, special features, trading policies, transportation and parking, special events, and options for dining and tourism so that you may maximize your browsing and shopping experience.

This website was conceived and designed as part of a final project for the INFO652 graduate class at the Drexel University iSchool. It is written and maintained for the benefit of book lovers everywhere. Bookstores were chosen on the criteria of being brick-and-mortar storefronts that offered at least 50% of their stock as used books. No money, goods, or services have been exchanged for any mention in this website of any bookstores, cafes, restaurants, or other establishments . There are no free or paid advertisements on this site. All opinions expressed are those of The Phrugal Librarian alone.
