Sport and fitness whilst studying at Drexel University.
Introduction.
If you’re coming to Drexel University as student please, no matter what your sport and fitness regime is, please keep it up when you start your studying here. Hopefully you’re already committed to a particular sport or maintaining a fitness regime; and will be looking forward to joining new sports teams and clubs here at Drexel University, Philadelphia. If not,, it’s oh so easy for first year students, probably tasting their first real sense of freedom away from home - to neglect keeping fit and watching their weight. The net result of which before they know it is they’ve gained more pounds in weight than they thought possible and then find themselves struggling to lose that extra weight. If you’re overweight; being away from home could just be that extra bit of motivation to get fit, lose weight and - hey you never know you might discover a sport that becomes a passion for the rest of your life. Kitting yourself out to play sports and keep fit might seem an added expense that you could do without when you start your university life. However, I hope if you read on I can persuade you otherwise - not forgetting of course the great deals you can get in sports wear and keep-fit gear over the internet.
Why sport and fitness is important whilst at university.
Just how true is the old saying: Healthy body - Healthy mind? Well sadly you’ve only got to look around yourself anywhere in the USA to see people who, if their minds are as redundant as most of their body weight - the nation’s in for a tricky ride! Whilst you’re a student you will be leading a largely sedentary life and you really need to compensate for that by getting involved in a team sports activity like tennis, rowing, basketball, Track & Field athletics etc. What you need to remember is that not only will you be ‘sedentary’ whilst you’re a student but - then after that most jobs these days, certainly ones that university graduates are going to go into, are sedentary ones; meaning that unless you are extremely careful with what you eat - and how much you eat - you will put on weight that, as you get older, becomes more and more difficult to lose. And some people devote a good chunk of their live to dieting only !
If the idea of being involved in a competitive team doesn’t appeal to you then at least look at the various fitness regimes you could follow or better still - join the Drexel Dragons fitness program.
Play the long game with sport and fitness.
I’m going to presume that we all understand what is meant by the long game? Participating in a team sport or at least having a fitness regime needs to be part of the ‘long game’ you play at university. Think of this - why are you attending university? Of course there’s no one answer to that - but a part of the answer will be to improve your job/career prospects. OK, so you go for a job interview, you are one of two candidates who are the best that the company will choose from. One of you is a member of a sports team and looks fit and healthy, the other - well let’s just say isn’t and doesn’t! It is a universal fact that most companies will employ the person that’s the member of a sports team and/or looks fit and healthy. The reason why is much deeper than they might look physically better/more attractive than an overweight and unhealthy looking person. Someone that’s a member of a sports team or club, is showing an interest and a commitment to something other than their work. If you like put more simply, they have a life beyond work - which will be aid their mental health being a release from the stress and pressure of their work. By virtue of the fact that their ‘outside interest’ involves physical activity, the company will have confidence that the person is generally healthy and is, therefore, less likely to have time off work. There are plenty of articles out here in cyberspace about the importance of sport and fitness, not to mention how big an impact keeping fit and healthy can make to your future wealth as well.
