Somerset
Medical Center
Maternity Department
Somerville, NJ
This
45-bed unit brought a fresh approach to maternity care at Somerset
Hospital. The Labor and Delivery area included five private
labor and delivery rooms where patients and their families could
experience the miracle of birth in comfortable, home-like private
rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
During the postpartum experience, patients recover in private and
semi-private rooms with their babies and significant others at their
sides. Patient rooms are individualized through the use of
wallborders and artwork. The unit has a quiet, upscale feel enhanced by the use of architectural columns which are
expressed at the entry to each pair of rooms. Faux
finish sponging on these columns give rich texture while
camouflaging wear and tear. Indirect cove lighting is utilized
in nurseries, while wall sconces provide a soft level of night
lighting in an effort to diminish the typical hospital glare. Carpet
was selected for its acoustic value as well as its hospitality-like
feel. 6’ vinyl-backed roll goods were utilized because of
its repairability and resistance to bacteria.
