The
Glass Box at Christiana Hospital
Christiana Care Health Services
Newark, DE
The
Glass Box was the first piece of the Patient Service Center
completed in November, 2000. Because the shop will face into
the new main lobby when the entire project is opened, it was
essential that the shop design was integrated into the architecture
of the lobby as a whole. Therefore, the design of the stain
glass vision panels was intended to integrate the motifs in the
lobby from the ornamental rail and glass back elevator shaft.
The vision panels allow the shop staff to create eye-catching window
displays that can be viewed by passers-by while at the same time the
stain glass patterns make a bold impression from a distance as the
visitor enters the lobby through the front revolving door.
All
of the millwork in the Glass Box was custom designed to integrate
these same motifs while using rich cherry tones to create a warm,
upscale ambiance. The cashwrap and perimeter units, display
wall panels and trim were provided by a millwork house while the
freestanding fixtures were fabricated by a fixtures specialty shop.
The task of coordinating the wood finishes was challenging, but in the
end the result was a totally harmonious and integrated look.
