A Student's Guide to Cheap Events in Philadelphia

Even in the City of Brotherly Love it can be expensive to go take in a show or an art exhibit. Thankfully, Philadelphia contains some pretty good deals on entertainment, especially for students, if you know where to look. Between free lectures from the various historical associations in Philly, to the many free cultural festivals which occur throughout the year, to the large amount of public art from the Percent for Art program, to free outdoor concerts in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia is a haven of cultural events for everyone.
Due to the large amount of academic institutions within Philadelphia (over 80!), there are a wide amount of discounts especially available to students. These can come both from the colleges, or as general student discounts from the events and institutions themselves. However, they are not always advertised, and sometimes the easiest way to discover if an event has student discounts is to call. Most of the colleges offer calendars and mailing lists of special discount events particularly for their own students.
This guide is not by any means an exhaustive resource of all that is available to do in Philadelphia (for that, see the Philly Fun Guide). Instead, it focuses on some of my personal favorite free events, although it contains a wide spectrum of types of events, including theatre, music, art, and a list of resources.
