In a Jam or Jam On?

We all have those days when karma literally hits us right in the face. You are having a great day when suddenly you say to yourself, "OH NO! I have a huge green thing in my teeth!!" What a freaking nightmare. Problems like this are easily solved.

At the office:  Click that handy staple gun and use a brand new-probably-never- touched-by-human-germs-staple to clean that icky thing out of your teeth. Be careful not to scratch the enamel of your teeth. Also, you may want to do this when no one else is around.

On a date: Quickly go to the restroom. Either use the post from your earring or pull a thread from your clothes. The earring thing might seem a little extreme but it works well when you are desperate. You can always wash the earring before or after the mess.

Other Preventive Measures:  Don’t eat food that is going to jam you in. Sandwiches with cheese are not a good idea when you are not comfortable with the person you are dining with. The same goes for spinach salad, kaiser rolls, barbeque ribs (you will be pulling your earring out faster than you can wash your hands!), and corn on the cob. Just think before you order.

Loose Lips:  Making sure that your lipstick stays on is always a challenge.  Fortunately, I enjoy the whole act of putting on my lipliner and lipstick.  It gives me the opportunity to try different looks all day long.  Plus I just love the little "click" that my compact mirror makes when I close it.  I may create a Vanity Queen theme song with that sound thrown into the mix.  But since there are some of you who would prefer to make one application last as long as possible, here is some advice:

1.  Before applying, cover your lips with a light layer of concealer.  It gives your lipstick something to "grab."

2.  Line your lips with short strokes.  In my experience, the cheaper and dryer the lipliner, the longer it lasts.

3.  Apply lipstick.  Matte is usually drier and tends to last longer.  However, it tends to make your lips "dry up" and appear smaller.

4.  When all done, stick your forefinger in your mouth and pull it out.  Whatever lipstick that would stick to your teeth is now on your finger.  Your friends won't have to tell you to "lick your fangs."

You and your lips should be good to go.  One more thing, if you want to avoid getting lipstick marks on your drinking glass, try to lick the area where your lips would go.  If you can find a way to do this subtly, please email me.  This is one trick I have not been able to do with finesse.

Other Jams:

On Guard

You cannot be expected to carry around a toiletry bag with you. However, it always helps to have backup. You never know when you will be caught off guard. The best tweezers I have are the ones on a little army knife that someone gave me. You just never know when you will feel something growing on your face.

I also carry around a miniature toothbrush kit. Trial sizes are awesome. Especially for mascara. Lipstick works well as a blusher when used carefully. Always have gum or mints handy.

Racoon Eyes are for Animals:  I cannot stand it when my mascara leaves smudges under my eyes. But I dislike waterproof mascara even more. What do I do? For one, I avoid oil-based makeup removers. I also make sure my eyelashes are completely dry before powdering them with either eyeshadow or face powder. My favorite recommendation is that you try an eyelash curler. I use only one coat of mascara when I use a curler. Less mascara on your lashes means less mascara to wear off.

Technique Does Count:  Brushes are awesome for eyeshadow, blush, face powder, and concealer.  Using your finger or sponges is okay if you are looking for a heavier application.  However, once you get turned on to brushes, you will never go back.

Wrinkles:  I love the sun so I really do not have any hope for preventing wrinkles.  However, I do know that Clinique has an awesome product that sure makes it seem like my wrinkles have lessened.  It is called "All About Eyes."  It goes on like a gel and feels wonderful.  Absorbs nicely so you can put moisturizer on top of it if you choose to do so.  Love it, love it, love it!

Flakes and Cracks:  Tired of foundation that lets you down two hours later?  Try mixing your favorite foundation with your favorite moisturizer.

The Big Lie About Moist Lips:  I used to be a big addict to a lip product that I shall not refer to by name.  I loved the "tingly" feeling it game me and used it all day long.  But then I came across a website that was devoted to addicts to this product.  I discovered that the reason I had to keep putting it on was because it was made with salicylic acid which is a drying agent.  My lips would feel dry and I would apply this stuff not realizing that it was a losing battle.  There is nothing wrong with this product because the label clearly says that it is for cold sores, thus the use of the salicylic acid.  Unfortunately, it is marketed as if it is right up there with lip protectors.  Stick to balm that holds moisture in.  You can always put gloss on top of it.  Boy, am I glad to have that monkey off my back.

Spending Money on Beauty Products:  Part of the reason that I set up this website is because I love to chat with people about what products they use.  I could spend hours talking about sunless tanning lotion or the best moisturizer.  I would also love to buy and try everything that is new on the market.  But like most people, I have other priorities like food and shelter.

Luckily, I found a great website that is devoted to regular saps like us where you can share your opinion on various products.  It is called www.epinions.com.  It has opinions for everything under the sun.  You might want to check it out before you buy.
