Business Effects Of the Smoking Ban in Restaurants.

Facts

vA lot of restaurants and bars have closed due to the smoking ban.
vPopular bar, cheers, in the West Island had to close down after 22 years due to a drop in revenue.
vA lot of people lost their jobs as a result of their bars or restaurants being shut down.
vA lot of smokers no longer go to restaurants where they cannot smoke hence the drop in business.
vThe city of Virginia produced a 1/3 of the nations supply of tobacco before its declaration as a health hazard in 1964.

Stats

vAccording to Bill Edwards, the owner of cheers, it will cost the Quebec government about $10 billion to see through the whole process.
vSince 1965, smoking among American adults has declined from 43 percent to an estimated 20 percent, and cigarette sales over the past decade have declined about 2 percent per year.
vStatewide bans currently are in effect in 26 states. While most apply to all workplaces, some exempt bars and casinos, which raises the ire of many restaurateurs. Maryland's across the-board statewide ban becomes effective Feb. 1, and Oregon's, which exempts casinos, will go into effect Jan. 1, 2009. A statewide ban with no exemptions also went into effect in Illinois on Jan. 1.
vThe Wisconsin Restaurant Association is backing a total workplace smoking ban, but the Wisconsin Tavern League wants taverns, classified as places with at least 51 percent of sales being alcoholic beverages, to be exempt. "There are some very big restaurants that would qualify as taverns," noted Ed Lump, association chief executive.
