Experiencing History in Delaware County

Here in the Delaware Valley, we are living in the midst of many great historical treasures. In the city of Philadelphia, one can find historical sites, buildings and artifacts that are important to the founding of our country, such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the Betsy Ross House to name a few. Visiting these places and learning their history is important to understanding how our country was established and how we evolved as a nation.

There is another important part of history that is also worth experiencing, and you can do it right here in your own community. Delaware County, PA is a great place to experience local history, and it is all within a short distance!

Learning about local history is both a fun and rewarding endeavor. One can learn about the person behind the name of a town such as Chadds Ford by visiting the homestead of its founder John Chads, or learn "hands on" about the life of an ordinary American family during the late 1700s by visiting the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation. Here in Delaware County, one can find battlefields, historical houses, living history, museums and more!

Self-Guided Tours

Unlike in the city where guided walking, bus and trolley tours are readily available for tourists. Here in Delaware County no such guided tours exist, but there is still just as important for people to visit our historical treasures. This website provides several self-guided driving tours of significant historical sites. While the stops on these tours nowhere near represent all the landmarks in Delaware County, it provides a starting point for discovery.
