Waverly: The Streetcar Years

With the coming of the electric streetcar to Greenmount Avenue in the 1890s, construction in Waverly boomed. While there had been only 42 houses in the neighborhood in 1884, 265 were built between 1885 and 1904. Even more impressively, between 1905 and 1924 an additional 1052 houses were built. Also interesting is the change in structural composition of the houses. Of the houses built before 1895, 74% were of frame construction. After 1905, as it became possible for the middle and working classes to commute to jobs downtown, 98% of the houses built were traditional brick rowhouses.
