Waverly: History of a Baltimore Neighborhood

This website contains a short history of the Waverly neighborhood in North Baltimore. Waverly was initally settled in the middle of the nineteenth century, as a small village, which also contained the summer homes of wealthy Baltimoreans. With the coming of the streetcar in the 1880s, many propertes were subdivided and rowhouses were built for workers commuting into downtown. In 1888, the city of Baltimore annexed Waverly and the surrounding communities.

Since that time, Waverly has had many of the ups and downs typical of both Baltimore and northeastern industrial cities generally. Thus it is a particularly interesting test case with which to look at the history of America's cities in the 20th century.
