Our research philosophy is that the bridge between basic molecular biology and medicine will be built with bioengineering, through the integration of quantitative measurement  and modeling at the molecular and cellular level. We apply our systems approach to a critical problem in chronic disease, including cancer: the impact of chronic inflammation on cell repair, apoptosis and death.

The approach of our laboratory is to combine experimental and theoretical methods. We apply innovative protocols, assay technologies, and data analysis techniques to obtain time series data on multiple molecular and cell phenotype variables. We derive and employ “top-down” models to describe the interaction of observed variables. We are also working on ways to relate data-based models to synthetic “bottom-up” models of pathway mechanisms.

Applications include (a) identifying and characterizing biomarkers of disease state and individualized response to therapy, and (b) model-guided characterization of the dose-dependent effect and potential toxicity of therapeutics.
