What's Vocaloid? Meet the 'Loids Vocaloidism Blog Vocaforum

SSM Internet's first release into the Vocaloid franchise came in the lull between the Kagamine Twins and Megurine Luka of Crypton.  Gackpoid, otherwise known as Kamui Gakupo, was a departure from the normal usage of Japanese voice actors to make Vocaloid samplings.  Instead, SSM Internet contracted international J-Pop sensation, Gackt, to do the project.  Gackt's well-exercised range is exhibited in the product.  He wears a traditional Japanese outfit, and is a self-proclaimed samurai, carrying a rainbow-colored murasame blade that somehow functions as an instrument.  He's known for his love of eggplants, and in canon, tends to ride on a giant eggplant that functions like a horse.

Originally, Gakupo was not welcome in the Vocaloid community, seen as a rival to the powerful frontrunner of Crypton.  Many videos were made making fun of Gakupo and his "imperfect" voice sampling.  It wasn't until some users took a risk and created some hilarious compositions that remained on the charts, was he accepted.  Dancing Samurai and Turkish March: Owata! were just two of note.

Gakupo has evolved from his original box art to a bit more of a comical persona.  Once Megurine Luka was released, canon had created a love-hate relationship between the two characters, Gakupo finding her as his ideal woman, while she found him as a threat and rival to her success.
