Causes and Risk

Skin cancer is most commonly caused by overexposure to UltraViolet radiation, but can also be from:
  • Use of tanning booths
  • Suppression of the immune system from disease or medicine
  • Exposure to high levels of X-rays
  • Contact with arsenic or hydrocarbons
Those with the greatest risk should be examined regularly for skin cancer. These people include:
  • Those with fair skin, such as those that sunburn easily, freckle, or hurt in the sun
  • Those with blonde or red hair and blue or green eyes
  • Pigment-depleting conditions such as albinism and xeroderma pigmentosum.
  • Those who have already been treated for skin cancer
  • Those who have multiple moles, odd moles, or large moles from birth
  • Those who have relatives who have developed skin cancer
  • Those who had sever sunburn early in life
  • Those who are under 30 years old, or over 60
