Skin cancer is most commonly caused by overexposure to UltraViolet radiation, but can also be from:
- Use of tanning booths
- Suppression of the immune system from disease or medicine
- Exposure to high levels of X-rays
- Contact with arsenic or hydrocarbons

Those with the greatest risk should be examined regularly for skin cancer. These people include:
- Those with fair skin, such as those that sunburn easily, freckle, or hurt in the sun
- Those with blonde or red hair and blue or green eyes
- Pigment-depleting conditions such as albinism and xeroderma pigmentosum.
- Those who have already been treated for skin cancer
- Those who have multiple moles, odd moles, or large moles from birth
- Those who have relatives who have developed skin cancer
- Those who had sever sunburn early in life
- Those who are under 30 years old, or over 60
