History of FLOC

Friends of Literacy in Oscoda County (FLOC) began May 18, 2006. Seven concerned citizens of Oscoda County showed up for that first meeting, three of which are still a part of the group. FLOC began because the illiteracy rate in Oscoda County (per data from the 2000 census) is approximately 23%-30%. Additionally many people in Oscoda County are functionally illiterate. They cannot fill out job applications, operate a computer or read a prescription from a doctor. Oscoda County was one of only two or three counties left in Michigan that did not have a literacy council.

The board of directors is made up of community members that represent: the Oscoda County Library, Mio AuSable and Farview Area schools, Michigan Works, Oscoda County DHS, MSU Extension, and citizens at large.
