Receptor Mediated Transcytosis of Insulin Loaded Nanoparticles Across the Intestinal Epithelium
-
Insulin loaded nanoparticle carrier system for oral administration.  The nanoparticle carrier system will protect the insulin from enzyme digestion and conjugated ligands to the nanoparticle surface will provide a mechanism by which the loaded particles can be ‘taken’ across the intestinal epithelium.  Once across the intestinal wall, the particles will enter systemic circulation and provide a steady release of insulin into the bloodstream.  The purpose of the steady release is to maintain basal insulin levels for patients with Type I Diabetes.

Nanoparticle Carrier System

Barriers to Oral Delivery

  • Digestion in the stomach
  • Enzymatic breakdown in the intestines
  • Transport across the epithelial wall
  • Loss of bioactivity once across the intestines
