A Guide to Demographic Research in Sub-Saharan Africa
At the University of Pennsylvania.
This guide is intended to help graduate and undergraduate students
who are interested in demography, family planning, development, sociology,
public health, and social work in Sub-Saharan Africa. Particular
emphasis is placed on acquiring present demographic statistics in Africa,
although many of the resources include historical data. Some general
resources on Sociology and African Studies are included.

Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) are nationally representative
household surveys with large sample sizes of about 5,000 households. DHS
surveys provide data for a wide range of monitoring and impact evaluation
indicators in the areas of population, health, and nutrition. One can search
by selecting country/region and subjects such as abortion, child labor,

population information, information on country census dates, statistical
software applications, technical assistance, and access to the International
Database (IDB). The IDB is a searchable database of demographic information

information.
