A Guide to Demographic Research in Sub-Saharan Africa

At the University of Pennsylvania.






This guide is intended to help graduate and undergraduate students who are interested in demography, family planning, development, sociology, public health, and social work in Sub-Saharan Africa.  Particular emphasis is placed on acquiring present demographic statistics in Africa, although many of the resources include historical data.  Some general resources on Sociology and African Studies are included.

Demographic and Health Surveys [Online]
Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) are nationally representative household surveys with large sample sizes of about 5,000 households. DHS surveys provide data for a wide range of monitoring and impact evaluation indicators in the areas of population, health, and nutrition. One can search by selecting country/region and subjects such as abortion, child labor, and AIDS behavior. The site is also an exhaustive gateway for other statistical resources in the field of population studies and public health.

The International Programs Center (IPC), part of the Population Division of the U.S. Bureau of the Census, contains current and projected world population information, information on country census dates, statistical software applications, technical assistance, and access to the International Database (IDB).  The IDB is a searchable database of demographic information from 1951 to the present. It was last updated May 2000 and includes projected information.

United Nations Statistical Division: Demographic and Social Statistics [Online]
Provides a wealth of data and resources on population statistics worldwide.  The site includes reports titled "Social Indicators", "Population of capital cities and cities of 100,000 and more inhabitants", "The World's Women 2000: Trends and Statistics", and others.  It is also recommended that one search the main page for the UNSD for more general databases and resources.
