When people think of Eating Disorders they commonly think of women. Little do they know there are silent victims out there who desperately need help. Men also suffer from eating disorders. The most common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, and B.E.D. (Binge-Eating Disorder). 10% of all people with eating disorders are men. Doctors say the percentage is higher, but the cases are under-reported because of the embarrassment men have. This is because eating disorders are thought to be a problem only in women. The number, though, of men seeking treatment is increasing. The reasons men acquire eating disorders are various. Men, like women, are influenced by advertisements. Ads such as body building, weight lifting, and muscle toning promotions, make men feel as if they don't live up to the standards of society. They in turn binge and purge themselves in order to get the look suitable for women. They also stop eating and over exercise. Some men acquire eating disorders because they were teased as children for their obesity. The competitiveness of sports also drives men to binge, purge, and over-exercise. Sports demands thinness, and some men will do anything to succeed in their sport. Jobs that demand thinness are also an added stress on men. The symptoms of eating disorders in men are the same as those for women. They are starvation, impaired body images, and the fear of getting fat. Treatment also is similar for both men and women.
