Drexel University’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers takes home first place at the Mid-Atlantic Regional competition once again. The team competed April 28-29th at the University of Pittsburgh against Bucknell University, University of Delaware, Temple University, University of Maryland (3rd), University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown (2nd), and Villanova University.  Drexel University placed first in design paper, first in final product, second in oral presentation, and first in both the men's and women's sprint and second in both the men's and women's endurance races.  With those placements Drexel took first place overall and advanced to the national level for the 9th consecutive year.

This year's national competition is to be held at Oklahoma State University June 15-17, 2006. For more information visit the official National Concrete Canoe Competition website or visit Oklahoma State University's concrete canoe website

2006 National Concrete Canoe Competition

Drexel University's concrete canoe team finished an impressive tenth place in the 2006 National Concrete Canoe Competition . Of the finalists, winners were determined based on an overall score which included design, presentation, appearance and performance in the race.

The 19th annual National Concrete Canoe Competition was held by the American Society of Civil Engineers in Stillwater, Okla., and was hosted by Oklahoma State University. ASCE's Concrete Canoe Competition provides students with a practical application of the engineering principles they learn, along with building essential team and project management skills. The event tests the students' knowledge, creativity and stamina, while displaying the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material. Teams qualified for the NCCC by placing first in one of 18 regional competitions held throughout the United States during the spring. Teams placing second in a regional competition behind a university that finished in the top five at the previous year's national competition were also invited.

Drexel's canoe, Concrete Charlie, was engineered using a high-tech, self leveling concrete that is nearly half the weight of standard concrete used in sidewalks. Charlie weighed 302 pounds and was a self-consolidating concrete with a steel reinforcement cage. The members of Drexel's team finished an impressive 2nd in design, 9th in oral presentation, and 15th in product.
