| Olin Workshop
on Indoor Air Quality
Purpose of the Workshop
The environment within buildings can
have as much effect on human health as the outdoor environment.
People spend much, if not most, of their time inside: working, relaxing
and recreating. Examination of indoor environment has taken, until
recently, a back seat to our study of general air pollution. During
the decade of the 1980s, Sick Building Syndrome became a topic for
conversation. It was recognized at that time that both indoor chemical
and biological contaminants affect people and animals. What became
immediately obvious was that sampling and analytical methods adequate
for contamination in outdoor air or on outdoor surfaces were not
adequate for the indoor environment. The rapid changes in temperature
and humidity had major effects on sample collection. Even modest
differences in indoor conditions could have large effects on the
presence of contaminants. As a response, new methods were developed.
New interest on the effects of contamination has occurred, leading
to studies relating certain contaminants with specific human diseases
and syndromes. It is the purpose of this workshop to bring attendees
new information on indoor sampling techniques, analytical methods
and effects of contaminants on people.
