Adaptive Devices and Positioning Equipment
Here is a list of my favorite adaptive devices and positioning equipment with a brief description of each classroom tool.
Pencil Grips
There are a number of pencil grips to discourage ineffective grasping of pencil and to decrease or eliminate fatigue when writing.
Tri-go Pencil Grip This pencil grip encourages correct finger placement by providing three holes where fingers set; the biggest hole is for the thumb. This grip can easily be used by either right or left-handed students.
Thick ‘n’ Thin Pencil Grips Thickly padded grip aids in grasping.
Spongy Pencil Grips Ideal for those writers who squeeze too hard or who need a visual &/or tactile cue as to where to place fingers. 4 styles.
Comfort Grip Pen Reduce writers fatigue with this chunky, wide barrel pen with the built in spongy foam grip. The barrel is cushioned and has a rim to keep fingers away from the pen tip.
Seat Cushion
I find this cushion helpful for children who have difficulty sitting still. It provides them with the movement they need in order to focus in the classroom or at home. Many therapists also use this with children at mealtimes.
Slant Desk
There are positioning devices to achieve the desired 20 degree angle for writing and reading. I prefer this low profile slant board from pfot.com. which encourages correct wrist positioning and visual focus. Overlays are also available to add to your current slantboard that can help provide slippage of pencil when writing.
